Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re looking forward to the long weekend, hopefully we can all get to the pool! Thank you again to everyone who came out for PYM 8th Grade Weekend at Shrine Mont this past weekend. We had a fantastic turnout for such a small age group (over 100!) and our weekend chaplain, Matt Rawls, did a fantastic job. It was an outstanding finish to what was another banner year for PYM and we could not do it without your support.

On behalf of the Diocese of Virginia, thank you so much for spending your weekends with us this year and helping us create the opportunities for youth to grow. We cannot do the work we do without your support and it means the world to us. We’ve learned a great deal this year and look forward to doing it even bigger and better in 2018. The dates and all the forms are listed at the bottom of this message, let me know if you have any questions.

Also, just because it’s summer and PYM is on hiatus, it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! The following is a message from Maggie Kennedy who works with Paris and I in the Christian Formation office about Senior High Youth Conference at Shrine Mont this summer, check it out………

“Hello Sr. High & 8th grade weekend-ers!

Many of you have told us that you would love a week long version of a PYM weekend… and I’m happy to tell you that THAT EXISTS!

We have a camp at Shrine Mont called Senior High Youth Conference. You need to be a rising 9th – rising 12th grader to attend and it is July 16-23rd. If you come to SHYC you can expect to be challenged, and to stretch yourself physically and spiritually while having a ton of fun and hanging out with awesome people! This is a great camp for you who wish to grow as leaders. Formation and small group time, helping others, dance parties and much more will happen at your week-long SHYC experience. This year in addition to a focus on service, we will be doing work on “storytelling” and have an expert storyteller who will be joining us for the week to assist. We do still have several spots available, but please act fast! Scholarships are available so if cost is a concern, please fill out the attached scholarship form.

And, you can register here: http://www.shrinemontcamps.net/registration.html. If you have any questions, please reach out to Maggie Kennedy at mkennedy@thediocese.net and she will help!”

That’s all for now. Thanks again for everything and if I don’t hear from you, have a fantastic summer!

Greetings Youth Leaders! May the Fourth be with you!

As most of you already know PYM 8th Grade Weekend at Shrine Mont is right around the corner! The weekend is May 19-21, 2017 and is open to all 8th grade youth. We’re super excited to have Matt Rawls, who is the youth minister at St. Mary’s, Goochland, as our weekend chaplain. You can find the registration packet  here and a flyer from the PYM committee here. Feel free to pass on both the registration packet and the flyer with anyone who might be interested in joining us, the more the merrier!

Registration is now open and we’re accepting forms and dues ($150 per participant) up until Friday when you arrive. However, please let me know directly (mwade@thediocese.net) of your group and who is coming no later than COB Wednesday, May 17th. I use that information to make plans for housing, food, programming, etc. It takes a long time to get fully organized so the sooner you can let me know, the better! Please include: name, gender, and if they’re a youth or adult.

That’s all for now on 8th Grade Weekend, looking forward to seeing you all for what promises to be another great time at Shrine Mont. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to be supportive, see you all soon!

PYM 6th/7th Grade & 8th Grade Weekend Registration and Marketing Materials March 31, 2017

Filed under: Forms,fun stuff!,PYM,Resources,Support,upcoming opportunities — mwade91383 @ 3:52 pm

Greetings Youth Leaders!

Spring is here and that means it’s time to start ramping up for our middle school PYM weekends at Shrine Mont. I have lots of information about both I want to share with you, so I’ll get right to it. Some of this stuff I know you already know, but it can’t hurt to hear it again, so here goes………

-PYM 6th/7th Grade Weekend is April 21-23, 2017 and is open to all 6th and 7th grade youth here in our diocese. Pete Nunnally, who is the youth minister at St. Paul’s, Richmond, is going to be our weekend chaplain, and we’re very excited to have him on board! You can find the registration packet here  and a flyer from the PYM committee here.

-PYM 8th Grade Weekend is May 19-21, 2017 and is open to all 8th grade youth here in our diocese. Matt Rawls, who is the youth minister at St. Mary’s, Goochland, will be our chaplain for that weekend and we’re psyched to have him, too! You can find the registration packet here and a flyer from the PYM committee here.

-The PYM committee also put together a couple things to support the marketing effort for our weekends that I encourage you to share with your parish however you see fit. Below you’ll find a blurb the committee wrote which might be perfect for your bulletin. They also created a short video which I think is pretty cute and is a testament to their enthusiasm for our program. Feel free to check them out and pass them on if you like.

“Come to Shrine Mont for a weekend with PYM! It will be filled with lots of laughter, learning, and love. Join us for 6th/7th Grade Weekend April 21-23 and 8th Grade Weekend May 19-21. Both weekends consist of numerous activities, but not limited to: songs, games, worship, small groups, and a dance! You should come out to grow your faith with kids your age while meeting youth from all over the Diocese of Virginia. Talk to your youth leader to find out more!”

Check out the PYM Spring 2017 Promo Video here.

That’s all for now, let me know if you have any questions about either of the weekends. Registration is NOW OPEN for both weekends and will close the Wednesday before each weekend, so don’t delay. Thanks again for all your support and everything you do for our youth. See you at Shrine Mont soon!

Spring Youth Day of Service (March 25, 10 – 1PM @ Shalom Farms in Goochland, VA) March 8, 2017

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re enjoying the occasional taste of warm weather we’re getting. There’s no doubt about it that the seasons are turning and we’re going to be outside a whole lot more very soon. Which brings me to what we’re talking about today, PYM Spring Day of Service!

As most of you already know PYM is hosting its semiannual community service/volunteer project in a couple weeks on March 25th. We’re going back to Shalom Farms to help them with their efforts providing fresh produce to low income communities here in Virginia. We first visited Shalom Farms in 2016 and it was a big success, over 80 people came out! Their operation is impressive and well organized and it was really fun to be able to easily pitch in and make a meaningful difference.

This event is free and open to anyone in 6th through 12th grade and a great chance to log some volunteer hours. The event will run from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and will conclude with a pizza lunch which I will provide for all of the participants and chaperones. The work is hands on and can get a little dirty but I don’t think anyone went home really messy last year. The key is having good footwear/work boots and a decent pair of work gloves. I’ll have some extra (so will Shalom Farms) but we recommend bringing your own and a water bottle.

Attached you’ll find the DOV  SYDOS 3.25.17 Flyer and Registration as well as the waiver and information sheet  from Shalom Farms. Please feel free to pass these on to anyone who might be interested. All participants must fill out and submit (or bring with them on the day of) the registration form and waiver. If you aren’t sending your forms in and are bringing them with you please shoot me an email letting me know how many to expect so I can pass the word on to Shalom Farms.

Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do to help. See you all at the farm in a couple weeks!

2017, Big Year For Senior High Youth (Sign Up Deadlines Rapidly Approaching!) January 3, 2017

Happy New Year’s Youth Leaders!

I hope you all had wonderful holidays and enjoyed ringing in the new year. As most of you already know there are lots of big things coming in 2017 and youth ministry here in the Diocese of Virginia is no different. There are two events I want to quickly highlight for your high school youth. These two events are going to headline what I know are going to be great events in 2017 and I hope you can get your youth involved…..but you have to act fast!

#Awaken:Grace – February 3-5, 2017 at Richmond Hill Retreat Center (Richmond, VA)

The first of our new annual spiritual formation retreat designed specifically for your youth who are looking to explore deeper into their faith than conventional youth ministry retreats and to help self-discover what their faith means to them. The leadership team we assembled is awesome and the program is phenomenal. I’m really excited for this brand new program but we need youth to take a chance with us on something new. Click here to find the flyer and the registration form. Paperwork is due by Jan 31st which is less than a month away so don’t delay!

Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) – July 10-14, 2017 at the University of Central Oklahoma (Edmond, OK)

EYE is the biggest youth event the episcopal church offers and this year will be no different. It’s a nationwide gathering that happens once every three years so this is likely the only chance each of your youth will have to go. These events are always headlined with really talented speakers and very fulfilling workshops, not to mention lots of other fun programs in between. Like #Awaken:Grace slots are limited so if you’re interested check out the flyer/application here and get it in by February 15th at the latest.

That’s all for today. I hope everyone is having a smooth transition back to the real world after such a long and wonderful holiday. If there’s anything I can do to be supportive or if you have any questions about either of these events just let me know, happy to help. Thanks again for all of your wonderful and important ministries and Happy New Year’s!

Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) 2017! July 10-14, 2017 December 15, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Advent season and the holiday craziness isn’t overwhelming. I for one feel like December has flown by (Christmas is in ten days!) and I imagine the rest of the month will be more of the same.

I have great news about an upcoming opportunity in 2017 that you’ll be very excited to hear about. Episcopal Youth Event (or EYE) is happening in July of 2017 and the Diocese of Virginia is going! We are looking for 24 of your youth from all over our diocese to attend this event and 7 adult chaperones to join them. EYE is July 10-14 in Edmond, OK at the University of Central Oklahoma. EYE is the largest gathering of Episcopalians outside of General Convention and is a fantastic chance to see the great Episcopal Church in action. The event is about 5 days jam packed with formation, small group conversation, really fantastic keynote speakers, outreach projects, and it’s a ton of fun! I went to St. Paul, MN for EYE 2011 and it’s still an experience I think about all the time and remember fondly.

Our group will gather on the 9th for an overnight at a parish in northern Virginia and get on plane the next day to get to Oklahoma. Details are still being ironed out about the 9th but information, a flyer, and how to apply can all be found in this packet HERE. EYE is a huge opportunity for your youth and only happens once every 3 years. Unless you are a freshman this is the only opportunity for them to attend that they’ll ever have. This event is for youth who are currently in high school. Be sure to get the application into the hands of your youth and/or chaperones as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is in two months (February 15th) and I’ll be following up with the group attending shortly thereafter.

This is a big deal in the Episcopal Church folks and I would love nothing more than to get your youth to Oklahoma this summer. Don’t let the opportunity go to waste! If you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do to help please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks again, and happy holidays!

#Awaken:Grace, Spiritual Formation Retreat for Youth (Feb 3-5, 2017 @ Richmond Hill) November 29, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders and Happy Holidays!

I hope this message finds you well as begin the season Advent. I have one very exciting announcement to pass on to you all today and it’s been a long time coming, so here goes!…

The Diocese of Virginia would like to formally invite your high school youth to the first annual spiritual formation retreat! I have been working with a team of very talented youth people and clergy from all over Virginia who have built this brand new program from the ground up for 2017.  It is specifically catered to meet the spiritual and formation needs of youth looking to dive deeper into faith and their relationship with God. This new program will be hosted at Richmond Hill Retreat Center in downtown Richmond which really offers something unique and unlike any other diocesan youth program.

You can find the flyer and registration form here which includes more information about the program. Please feel free to share with your youth and parents. Space and time to sign up is limited so don’t delay. If you have any questions or want to learn more let me know! Thanks again and Happy Holidays everyone!
