Episcopal Youth Event Sign Up Deadline Extended to Feb. 28th February 10, 2017

Filed under: fun stuff!,Mission,national church,Resources,upcoming opportunities — mwade91383 @ 12:35 pm

Greetings Youth Leaders!

We are quickly closing in on the application deadline for Episcopal Youth Event 2017 and we are going to extend it until February 28th. That’s two more weeks for youth and adults to get their forms in. We currently have about half the spots filled up and would like to take several more if we can. You can click here for the registration packet and flyer and you can click here to read a previous post from our blog with more details. Feel free to pass on this stuff to anyone who might be interested.

Just as a brief overview, EYE is July 9-14 in Edmond, OK at the University of Central Oklahoma. Our group will get together the night before at a church in NOVA and fly as a group out on the 10th (and back on the 14th). The event is about 1,000 Episcopalian high school youth and chaperones from all over the country for several days of truly outstanding programming. The schedule is packed with music, keynote addresses, small group session, games, prayer, recreation, and all things youth. Historically groups have come away from this event feeling refreshed and plugged in to the church in ways they never thought possible. Scholarships are available on a case by case basis. It’s really one of the best programs the church so don’t let this one slip by!

If you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do please don’t hesitate to ask, let’s make this final push count! Thanks again for all the support!

2017, Big Year For Senior High Youth (Sign Up Deadlines Rapidly Approaching!) January 3, 2017

Happy New Year’s Youth Leaders!

I hope you all had wonderful holidays and enjoyed ringing in the new year. As most of you already know there are lots of big things coming in 2017 and youth ministry here in the Diocese of Virginia is no different. There are two events I want to quickly highlight for your high school youth. These two events are going to headline what I know are going to be great events in 2017 and I hope you can get your youth involved…..but you have to act fast!

#Awaken:Grace – February 3-5, 2017 at Richmond Hill Retreat Center (Richmond, VA)

The first of our new annual spiritual formation retreat designed specifically for your youth who are looking to explore deeper into their faith than conventional youth ministry retreats and to help self-discover what their faith means to them. The leadership team we assembled is awesome and the program is phenomenal. I’m really excited for this brand new program but we need youth to take a chance with us on something new. Click here to find the flyer and the registration form. Paperwork is due by Jan 31st which is less than a month away so don’t delay!

Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) – July 10-14, 2017 at the University of Central Oklahoma (Edmond, OK)

EYE is the biggest youth event the episcopal church offers and this year will be no different. It’s a nationwide gathering that happens once every three years so this is likely the only chance each of your youth will have to go. These events are always headlined with really talented speakers and very fulfilling workshops, not to mention lots of other fun programs in between. Like #Awaken:Grace slots are limited so if you’re interested check out the flyer/application here and get it in by February 15th at the latest.

That’s all for today. I hope everyone is having a smooth transition back to the real world after such a long and wonderful holiday. If there’s anything I can do to be supportive or if you have any questions about either of these events just let me know, happy to help. Thanks again for all of your wonderful and important ministries and Happy New Year’s!

Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) 2017! July 10-14, 2017 December 15, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Advent season and the holiday craziness isn’t overwhelming. I for one feel like December has flown by (Christmas is in ten days!) and I imagine the rest of the month will be more of the same.

I have great news about an upcoming opportunity in 2017 that you’ll be very excited to hear about. Episcopal Youth Event (or EYE) is happening in July of 2017 and the Diocese of Virginia is going! We are looking for 24 of your youth from all over our diocese to attend this event and 7 adult chaperones to join them. EYE is July 10-14 in Edmond, OK at the University of Central Oklahoma. EYE is the largest gathering of Episcopalians outside of General Convention and is a fantastic chance to see the great Episcopal Church in action. The event is about 5 days jam packed with formation, small group conversation, really fantastic keynote speakers, outreach projects, and it’s a ton of fun! I went to St. Paul, MN for EYE 2011 and it’s still an experience I think about all the time and remember fondly.

Our group will gather on the 9th for an overnight at a parish in northern Virginia and get on plane the next day to get to Oklahoma. Details are still being ironed out about the 9th but information, a flyer, and how to apply can all be found in this packet HERE. EYE is a huge opportunity for your youth and only happens once every 3 years. Unless you are a freshman this is the only opportunity for them to attend that they’ll ever have. This event is for youth who are currently in high school. Be sure to get the application into the hands of your youth and/or chaperones as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is in two months (February 15th) and I’ll be following up with the group attending shortly thereafter.

This is a big deal in the Episcopal Church folks and I would love nothing more than to get your youth to Oklahoma this summer. Don’t let the opportunity go to waste! If you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do to help please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks again, and happy holidays!

2016 mission trip sign up deadline extended & Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) 2017 May 5, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re having a productive week.  I have two quick announcements about diocesan summer trips coming up. We are extending our deadline for our summer mission trip to Philadelphia until after  PYM 8th Grade Weekend. The new deadline is Wednesday, May 18. We have limited space left but we’d like to fill those spots if possible. Just a brief reminder, the trip is open to youth currently in high school and is from July 17-23. Our starting (and drop off) point for the trip will be Immanuel Church on the Hill, Alexandria. For more information, reach out to me directly. You can also access the information/registration packet here.

The other piece is that we’re excited to announce some details about Episcopal Youth Event (or EYE) 2017. EYE is a the triennial national youth event that attracts over a thousand youth and chaperones to come together for 5 days of really powerful formation and fellowship. Our Diocese has been sending a group to this event since the 80’s and 2017 will be no different. EYE will be July 10-14 at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK. Youth who will be high school next school year are eligible to attend (current 8-11 graders).

We’ll be talking more and more about EYE in the coming months and the later part of 2016, but I just wanted to put it out on your radar if you wanted to begin talking about it with your youth. There will be an application process to select the group and we’ll roll out more details in the fall.

That’s all for now, I hope to see many of you NEXT WEEKEND at Shrine Mont for PYM 8th Grade Weekend. It’s going to be fantastic! Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do to be supportive.

“A Faith-Based Response to Gender Violence” January 29, 2015

Hi folks,

We are reaching out to the youth leaders of the Diocese to tell you about an awesome event sponsored by the Faith & Females group that we have slated for Saturday, Feb. 28, at Trinity, Charlottesville!

“A Faith-Based Response to Gender Violence” will be a chance for men and women (ages high school and older) to come together for conversation around a difficult issue, and to explore how we as Christians can equip ourselves to respond to issues of gender violence.

Here’s what the day will look  like:

10 a.m.                 Prayer and Guided Bible Study with Bishop Goff
10:30 a.m.           How to Identify & Respond to Gender Violence
12 p.m.                 Lunch and Presentation from the Shelter for Help in  Emergency (SHE)
1 p.m.                   Outreach Project for SHE
2 p.m.                   Close in Prayer

Participants will spend time in discussion to learn how to identify and respond to victims of trauma, with group leaders Margaret Edwards and Emily Rutledge. Margaret is a trauma counselor at the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center at the University of Virginia. A member of Our Saviour, Charlottesville, her work focuses on helping clients who have experienced interpersonal violence, sexual assault and stalking. Emily worked as an advocate for victims of sexual assault prior to teaching and then becoming a youth minister at Our Saviour.

There is a $15 cost, which includes lunch and outreach project materials. The student rate (high school and college) is $10. Limited scholarship assistance is available.

We need your help to get the word out! Here’s how:

  1. Register to attend! Click on this link, and bring payment (cash or check payable to the Diocese of Virginia) with you.
  2. Help us spread the word! Forward this information to your church, and encourage them to include the announcement in your newsletter or bulletins.
  3. We’re hoping this will be an intergenerational and diverse group of men and women (high-school and older) to ensure a broad and productive conversation.

We’re extremely excited about this event – and we hope you are too! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today.

Sr. High Weekend Review & General Convention 2015 November 24, 2014

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope you are all having a fantastic week and are excited about the upcoming holiday season! Today, I want to touch on two things: Senior High Weekend review and General Convention 2015.

The Senior High Weekend was truly a wonderful event. Thank you so much to everyone who came out! We had over 190 participants from all over our Diocese and the committee/keynote speaker (the Rev. Susan Daughtry) did an outstanding job. I’ve enjoyed hearing from many of you offering kind words and support to our team. I want you to know how much it means to have you all come out and support this ministry. Thank you again, and we look forward to seeing your junior high youth in the spring!

This upcoming summer is a General Convention year for the Episcopal Church and it’s time to start getting organized. General Convention is a lot like our diocesan Annual Council, but for all dioceses across the country and on a much larger scale. General Convention happens once every three years, and this year it’s being held in Salt Lake City, Utah. At every General Convention, they hope to have all provinces represented by two high school aged youth in addition to all the clergy and lay leaders who attend. If you know somebody who you think might be interested in representing Virginia, please help us spread the word. For more information, check out this link!

As always, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help your ministry!

EYE application due date extended & Your Youth Ministry Profile February 17, 2014

Greetings Youth Leaders,

We still have a little bit of space available for Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) so we are pushing back the due date for applications to Feb. 28. If you have youth who are interested and want to take part in the trip, please encourage them to apply as soon as possible. The trip itself is really going to be fantastic and it’s a great way to get some of your youth engaged in the Episcopal Church. You can access more info and the application here. Please feel free to give me a call or an email if you need more information or have any questions.

As many of your know, last week we had our third biannual Youth Leader Connection meetings here in Richmond and at The Falls Church. The meetings were a big success and we want to thank everyone who came out. At the meetings we did joined in a book review/discussion of Sustainable Youth Ministry by Mark Devries and at the end of the meeting we gave everyone a copy to take home!

The other component was the unrolling of our new youth ministry profiles. In an attempt to better our understanding of the needs of our youth ministries here in the Diocese, we’ve come up with the first piece of a several piece survey. The idea is that we can use this information to put together a profile of your parish and then use our resources to help your ministry grow and accomplish its goals. It also opens up a lot of opportunity for collaborations and resource-sharing across our Diocese, not just regionally. The survey itself is very basic and should take you no longer than five minutes to fill out. When you’re done please send it to us and we’ll use this information to hopefully help all of our ministries move forward.

Thank you all again for your work. Be sure to me know if you have any questions. Talk to you soon.
