Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re looking forward to the long weekend, hopefully we can all get to the pool! Thank you again to everyone who came out for PYM 8th Grade Weekend at Shrine Mont this past weekend. We had a fantastic turnout for such a small age group (over 100!) and our weekend chaplain, Matt Rawls, did a fantastic job. It was an outstanding finish to what was another banner year for PYM and we could not do it without your support.

On behalf of the Diocese of Virginia, thank you so much for spending your weekends with us this year and helping us create the opportunities for youth to grow. We cannot do the work we do without your support and it means the world to us. We’ve learned a great deal this year and look forward to doing it even bigger and better in 2018. The dates and all the forms are listed at the bottom of this message, let me know if you have any questions.

Also, just because it’s summer and PYM is on hiatus, it doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! The following is a message from Maggie Kennedy who works with Paris and I in the Christian Formation office about Senior High Youth Conference at Shrine Mont this summer, check it out………

“Hello Sr. High & 8th grade weekend-ers!

Many of you have told us that you would love a week long version of a PYM weekend… and I’m happy to tell you that THAT EXISTS!

We have a camp at Shrine Mont called Senior High Youth Conference. You need to be a rising 9th – rising 12th grader to attend and it is July 16-23rd. If you come to SHYC you can expect to be challenged, and to stretch yourself physically and spiritually while having a ton of fun and hanging out with awesome people! This is a great camp for you who wish to grow as leaders. Formation and small group time, helping others, dance parties and much more will happen at your week-long SHYC experience. This year in addition to a focus on service, we will be doing work on “storytelling” and have an expert storyteller who will be joining us for the week to assist. We do still have several spots available, but please act fast! Scholarships are available so if cost is a concern, please fill out the attached scholarship form.

And, you can register here: http://www.shrinemontcamps.net/registration.html. If you have any questions, please reach out to Maggie Kennedy at mkennedy@thediocese.net and she will help!”

That’s all for now. Thanks again for everything and if I don’t hear from you, have a fantastic summer!

PYM 8th Grade Weekend @ Shrine Mont May 19-21 May 4, 2017

Filed under: Forms,fun stuff!,PYM,Resources,Support,upcoming opportunities — mwade91383 @ 3:54 pm
Greetings Youth Leaders! May the Fourth be with you!

As most of you already know PYM 8th Grade Weekend at Shrine Mont is right around the corner! The weekend is May 19-21, 2017 and is open to all 8th grade youth. We’re super excited to have Matt Rawls, who is the youth minister at St. Mary’s, Goochland, as our weekend chaplain. You can find the registration packet  here and a flyer from the PYM committee here. Feel free to pass on both the registration packet and the flyer with anyone who might be interested in joining us, the more the merrier!

Registration is now open and we’re accepting forms and dues ($150 per participant) up until Friday when you arrive. However, please let me know directly (mwade@thediocese.net) of your group and who is coming no later than COB Wednesday, May 17th. I use that information to make plans for housing, food, programming, etc. It takes a long time to get fully organized so the sooner you can let me know, the better! Please include: name, gender, and if they’re a youth or adult.

That’s all for now on 8th Grade Weekend, looking forward to seeing you all for what promises to be another great time at Shrine Mont. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to be supportive, see you all soon!

PYM 6th/7th Grade & 8th Grade Weekend Registration and Marketing Materials March 31, 2017

Filed under: Forms,fun stuff!,PYM,Resources,Support,upcoming opportunities — mwade91383 @ 3:52 pm

Greetings Youth Leaders!

Spring is here and that means it’s time to start ramping up for our middle school PYM weekends at Shrine Mont. I have lots of information about both I want to share with you, so I’ll get right to it. Some of this stuff I know you already know, but it can’t hurt to hear it again, so here goes………

-PYM 6th/7th Grade Weekend is April 21-23, 2017 and is open to all 6th and 7th grade youth here in our diocese. Pete Nunnally, who is the youth minister at St. Paul’s, Richmond, is going to be our weekend chaplain, and we’re very excited to have him on board! You can find the registration packet here  and a flyer from the PYM committee here.

-PYM 8th Grade Weekend is May 19-21, 2017 and is open to all 8th grade youth here in our diocese. Matt Rawls, who is the youth minister at St. Mary’s, Goochland, will be our chaplain for that weekend and we’re psyched to have him, too! You can find the registration packet here and a flyer from the PYM committee here.

-The PYM committee also put together a couple things to support the marketing effort for our weekends that I encourage you to share with your parish however you see fit. Below you’ll find a blurb the committee wrote which might be perfect for your bulletin. They also created a short video which I think is pretty cute and is a testament to their enthusiasm for our program. Feel free to check them out and pass them on if you like.

“Come to Shrine Mont for a weekend with PYM! It will be filled with lots of laughter, learning, and love. Join us for 6th/7th Grade Weekend April 21-23 and 8th Grade Weekend May 19-21. Both weekends consist of numerous activities, but not limited to: songs, games, worship, small groups, and a dance! You should come out to grow your faith with kids your age while meeting youth from all over the Diocese of Virginia. Talk to your youth leader to find out more!”

Check out the PYM Spring 2017 Promo Video here.

That’s all for now, let me know if you have any questions about either of the weekends. Registration is NOW OPEN for both weekends and will close the Wednesday before each weekend, so don’t delay. Thanks again for all your support and everything you do for our youth. See you at Shrine Mont soon!

PYM Spring Youth Day of Service Address Change (Go to Midlothian, NOT Goochland) March 17, 2017

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re all having a wonderful week. One very quick but very important update today. Our event next Saturday is still on as scheduled, same date, time, and activities. The only difference is the address. Unbeknownst to me, the good people at Shalom Farms moved their operation and forgot to mention it to me until very recently. Their lease expired and their operation moved from Goochland to Midlothian. Repeat, do NOT go to Goochland next Saturday.

The new address is 2676 Venita Road in Midlothian, VA 23113. This is actually good news to those of you coming from the greater Richmond area or NOVA because its more central to Richmond. You won’t have to drive as far as you would to get to Goochland. Here are the turn by turn directions from Richmond straight from their updated website.

Directions to the New Farm:

From Richmond:

Merge onto 64 W towards Charlottesville

Take exit 175 for VA-288 S towards Chesterfield

Take the Huguenot Trail/VA-711 exit towards Robious Rd

Turn Right onto Huguenot Trail/VA-711

Turn Right onto Venita Rd/State Rte 624 (it is the first right you will encounter – and comes up quickly after you turn onto Huguenot Trail!)

Sorry about the mix up and not catching this sooner. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Also please be sure to email/call me ahead of time to let me know how many to expect in your group so I can be sure to have enough lunch. Thanks again, and see you all next Saturday!

Spring Youth Day of Service (March 25, 10 – 1PM @ Shalom Farms in Goochland, VA) March 8, 2017

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re enjoying the occasional taste of warm weather we’re getting. There’s no doubt about it that the seasons are turning and we’re going to be outside a whole lot more very soon. Which brings me to what we’re talking about today, PYM Spring Day of Service!

As most of you already know PYM is hosting its semiannual community service/volunteer project in a couple weeks on March 25th. We’re going back to Shalom Farms to help them with their efforts providing fresh produce to low income communities here in Virginia. We first visited Shalom Farms in 2016 and it was a big success, over 80 people came out! Their operation is impressive and well organized and it was really fun to be able to easily pitch in and make a meaningful difference.

This event is free and open to anyone in 6th through 12th grade and a great chance to log some volunteer hours. The event will run from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and will conclude with a pizza lunch which I will provide for all of the participants and chaperones. The work is hands on and can get a little dirty but I don’t think anyone went home really messy last year. The key is having good footwear/work boots and a decent pair of work gloves. I’ll have some extra (so will Shalom Farms) but we recommend bringing your own and a water bottle.

Attached you’ll find the DOV  SYDOS 3.25.17 Flyer and Registration as well as the waiver and information sheet  from Shalom Farms. Please feel free to pass these on to anyone who might be interested. All participants must fill out and submit (or bring with them on the day of) the registration form and waiver. If you aren’t sending your forms in and are bringing them with you please shoot me an email letting me know how many to expect so I can pass the word on to Shalom Farms.

Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do to help. See you all at the farm in a couple weeks!

PYM Sr. High Weekend @ Shrine Mont (Nov 4th – 6th) October 13, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re enjoying the beginning of what’s been a beautiful fall season. Today I want to share with you some resources for our PYM Sr. High Weekend which is a little less than 4 weeks away (November 4th-6th @ Shrine Mont). The committee has been very active planning and getting organized for our first retreat and we’re really excited about everything lined up including our keynote speaker this year, Brad Grinnen! Brad is no stranger to our Diocese and served our camps as chaplain as well as keynoting Sr. High Weekend in 2011. We’re very excited to have him back again!

The weekend promises to be a big success and we hope you can bring a group from your church, and to help with that recruiting effort we have some resources to share:

-The first resource is the registration packet itself HERE. Please note that pages 3 and 4 are information about the weekend and can be helpful for explaining what exactly the weekend might look and feel like.

-You can also go to our blog’s “PYM 101” page for more information about PYM and our weekends.

-The committee also created two colorful flyers (flyer_1 and flyer_2) that would be perfect for a bulletin board in your parishes or however you see fit.

Registration is NOW OPEN and we’ve already had a few groups sign up. Registration is $150 per participant and that’s all inclusive (room, board, programming). We do have some scholarship money available if needed, please inquire with me directly. Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do. Thank you again so much for all your support, see you all at Shrine Mont in a few weeks!

PYM Fall Youth Day of Service (This Saturday, 10/1 @ Sprout Center) CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER FORECASTS September 29, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders,

Unfortunately, due to the rain we have to cancel and reschedule PYM Fall Youth Day of Service. Our project this Saturday was supposed to be outdoors and they don’t have the space to host our large group  (over 100 total!) in their very limited indoor space. I spoke with their leadership and they’re obviously really disappointed but unfortunately there aren’t variable alternatives at this time and on such short notice. We’ll reschedule with Sprout Center for later in the year (mid to late October 2017, TBD exactly) so we’re beyond the hurricane/rain season and this is less likely to happen again.

I’m really disappointed it came to this but am very excited by the large amount of support and participants we had sign up. A very good sign of things to come here in the Diocese of Virginia in the world of youth ministry!

Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything else I can do. Have a good weekend and stay safe.
