|Greetings Youth Leaders! May the Fourth be with you!
As most of you already know PYM 8th Grade Weekend at Shrine Mont is right around the corner! The weekend is May 19-21, 2017 and is open to all 8th grade youth. We’re super excited to have Matt Rawls, who is the youth minister at St. Mary’s, Goochland, as our weekend chaplain. You can find the registration packet here and a flyer from the PYM committee here. Feel free to pass on both the registration packet and the flyer with anyone who might be interested in joining us, the more the merrier!
Registration is now open and we’re accepting forms and dues ($150 per participant) up until Friday when you arrive. However, please let me know directly (firstname.lastname@example.org) of your group and who is coming no later than COB Wednesday, May 17th. I use that information to make plans for housing, food, programming, etc. It takes a long time to get fully organized so the sooner you can let me know, the better! Please include: name, gender, and if they’re a youth or adult.
That’s all for now on 8th Grade Weekend, looking forward to seeing you all for what promises to be another great time at Shrine Mont. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to be supportive, see you all soon!

PYM 8th Grade Weekend @ Shrine Mont May 19-21 May 4, 2017
Convergence, 6/22-7/2 @ Randolph Macon College April 3, 2017
Here’s an interesting opportunity this summer for your youth I wanted to pass on. Check it out!
“Science and faith are two of the key ways we try to understand the world around us, and for many people these two ways of knowing tell very different stories. In the perception of some these stories are so different that only one or the other can be right, that science and faith must inevitably be in conflict. Evolution versus the creation stories in Genesis. Seven days of creation versus modern cosmology. But, does it have to be so? Can a person who believes in God also be a scientist? Can I go to church without “checking my brain at the door?”
If these are questions that you would like to wrestle with, I am excited to share an opportunity to do just that! Supported by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment, we will be offering a residential Youth Theology Institute on Faith & Science on the campus of Randolph-Macon College in Ashland Virginia from June 22 through July 2. We are calling it “Convergence” to emphasize that the conflict is not inevitable. You will explore relationships between religion and science, discuss faith and science with your peers. We will study scripture, the environment, food and water, and the origins of life and the cosmos. You will learn from Randolph-Macon and Union Presbyterian Seminary faculty. Also planned are rafting on the James River, a visit to Shalom Farms to help with planting and growing food, star gazing and more! And the cost for the institute is just $200 – which covers everything including room and board.
Convergence is open to rising sophomore, junior, and senior high school students.
That’s all for today. Don’t forget our PYM weekends are rapidly approaching, check out the post below for more details. Have a great week everyone!
Greetings Youth Leaders!
Spring is here and that means it’s time to start ramping up for our middle school PYM weekends at Shrine Mont. I have lots of information about both I want to share with you, so I’ll get right to it. Some of this stuff I know you already know, but it can’t hurt to hear it again, so here goes………
-PYM 6th/7th Grade Weekend is April 21-23, 2017 and is open to all 6th and 7th grade youth here in our diocese. Pete Nunnally, who is the youth minister at St. Paul’s, Richmond, is going to be our weekend chaplain, and we’re very excited to have him on board! -PYM 8th Grade Weekend is May 19-21, 2017 and is open to all 8th grade youth here in our diocese. Matt Rawls, who is the youth minister at St. Mary’s, Goochland, will be our chaplain for that weekend and we’re psyched to have him, too! You can find the registration packet here and a flyer from the PYM committee here.
-The PYM committee also put together a couple things to support the marketing effort for our weekends that I encourage you to share with your parish however you see fit. Below you’ll find a blurb the committee wrote which might be perfect for your bulletin. They also created a short video which I think is pretty cute and is a testament to their enthusiasm for our program. Feel free to check them out and pass them on if you like.
“Come to Shrine Mont for a weekend with PYM! It will be filled with lots of laughter, learning, and love. Join us for 6th/7th Grade Weekend April 21-23 and 8th Grade Weekend May 19-21. Both weekends consist of numerous activities, but not limited to: songs, games, worship, small groups, and a dance! You should come out to grow your faith with kids your age while meeting youth from all over the Diocese of Virginia. Talk to your youth leader to find out more!”

That’s all for now, let me know if you have any questions about either of the weekends. Registration is NOW OPEN for both weekends and will close the Wednesday before each weekend, so don’t delay. Thanks again for all your support and everything you do for our youth. See you at Shrine Mont soon!
Episcopal Youth Event Sign Up Deadline Extended to Feb. 28th February 10, 2017
Greetings Youth Leaders!
We are quickly closing in on the application deadline for Episcopal Youth Event 2017 and we are going to extend it until February 28th. That’s two more weeks for youth and adults to get their forms in. We currently have about half the spots filled up and would like to take several more if we can. You can click here for the registration packet and flyer and you can click here to read a previous post from our blog with more details. Feel free to pass on this stuff to anyone who might be interested.
Just as a brief overview, EYE is July 9-14 in Edmond, OK at the University of Central Oklahoma. Our group will get together the night before at a church in NOVA and fly as a group out on the 10th (and back on the 14th). The event is about 1,000 Episcopalian high school youth and chaperones from all over the country for several days of truly outstanding programming. The schedule is packed with music, keynote addresses, small group session, games, prayer, recreation, and all things youth. Historically groups have come away from this event feeling refreshed and plugged in to the church in ways they never thought possible. Scholarships are available on a case by case basis. It’s really one of the best programs the church so don’t let this one slip by!
If you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do please don’t hesitate to ask, let’s make this final push count! Thanks again for all the support!
#Awaken:Grace, Feb 3-5 @ Richmond Hill, Postponed (feedback needed!) February 2, 2017
Greetings Youth Leaders!
I hope you are all having great weeks and are staying warm! Unfortunately, due to low numbers we’re going to postpone our spiritual formation retreat (#Awaken:Grace) to a later date. We’re still really excited about the event, and I can’t tell you how impressed I am with my leadership team and their programming, but we want to be sure that this is both a resource and accessible for your youth moving forward.
To be sure we’re successful in the future, we’d love to hear from you all to help us figure out ways we can improve this new program. Below I came up with three questions that I would love to hear your thoughts on. All responses can be emailed to me directly (either hit “Reply” or email me at email@example.com) and I’ll take these notes back to my team. Your feedback is really helpful!
-In terms of mission, Is an intentional spiritual formation retreat for youth a good idea and one you would support? Feel free to elaborate if you wish.
-In terms of scheduling, what time of year makes the most sense for your youth to have this event? Any time to avoid?
-In terms of support, what can the diocese do to help get your youth involved?
Thanks again for your ongoing support and ministries. Have a great weekend everyone!

Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) 2017! July 10-14, 2017 December 15, 2016
Greetings Youth Leaders!
I hope everyone is having a wonderful Advent season and the holiday craziness isn’t overwhelming. I for one feel like December has flown by (Christmas is in ten days!) and I imagine the rest of the month will be more of the same.
I have great news about an upcoming opportunity in 2017 that you’ll be very excited to hear about. Episcopal Youth Event (or EYE) is happening in July of 2017 and the Diocese of Virginia is going! We are looking for 24 of your youth from all over our diocese to attend this event and 7 adult chaperones to join them. EYE is July 10-14 in Edmond, OK at the University of Central Oklahoma. EYE is the largest gathering of Episcopalians outside of General Convention and is a fantastic chance to see the great Episcopal Church in action. The event is about 5 days jam packed with formation, small group conversation, really fantastic keynote speakers, outreach projects, and it’s a ton of fun! I went to St. Paul, MN for EYE 2011 and it’s still an experience I think about all the time and remember fondly.
Our group will gather on the 9th for an overnight at a parish in northern Virginia and get on plane the next day to get to Oklahoma. Details are still being ironed out about the 9th but information, a flyer, and how to apply can all be found in this packet HERE. EYE is a huge opportunity for your youth and only happens once every 3 years. Unless you are a freshman this is the only opportunity for them to attend that they’ll ever have. This event is for youth who are currently in high school. Be sure to get the application into the hands of your youth and/or chaperones as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is in two months (February 15th) and I’ll be following up with the group attending shortly thereafter.
This is a big deal in the Episcopal Church folks and I would love nothing more than to get your youth to Oklahoma this summer. Don’t let the opportunity go to waste! If you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do to help please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks again, and happy holidays!
