PYM 8th Grade Weekend @ Shrine Mont, May 18 – 20, 2018 April 25, 2018

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope you all are having a good start to your week, and to those of you who were with us this past weekend, I hope you have recovered. It was truly a great weekend with an amazing group (and fabulous weather!) and I hope you and your youth got as much out of it as we did. Thank you again for coming out!

As most of you already know PYM 8th Grade Weekend at Shrine Mont is right around the corner, three weeks from Friday to be exact. The weekend is May 18 – 20, 2018 and is open to all 8th grade youth, registration is now open! We’re super excited to have Darren Steadman, who will have just graduated from VTS, as our weekend chaplain. You can find the registration packet here. Feel free to pass on the registration packet to anyone who might be interested in joining us, the more the merrier!

Registration is now open and we’re accepting forms and dues ($150 per participant) up until Friday when you arrive. However, please let me know directly (mwade@thediocese.net) of your group and who is coming no later than COB Tuesday, May 15th. I use that information to make plans for housing, food, programming, etc. It takes a long time to get fully organized so the sooner you can let me know, the better! Please include: name, gender, and if they’re a youth or adult.

That’s all for now on the 8th Grade Weekend, looking forward to seeing you all for what promises to be another great time at Shrine Mont. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to be supportive or to help get you and your youth there, see you all soon!

PYM Spring Youth Day of Service (3/24 @ Shalom Farm) CANCELLED. Please Read. February 26, 2018

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re all having a blessed Lenten Season. The Spring will be here before we know it and it’s about to get really busy for all things youth ministry.

I’m emailing you today to inform everyone that after careful consideration and a consultation with our bishops, we are cancelling PYM Spring Day of Service (Shalom Farms) on March 24th, 2018. There has been a great deal of energy (both nationally and within our own diocese) around what is happening in the news right now concerning the recent tragedy in Florida. It has come to our attention that there is an event happening in Washington DC (March For Our Lives) on the same day we had scheduled to visit Shalom Farms. We have heard from a number of churches already who have expressed interest in attending the event in DC instead of our visit to the farm so we have decided to clear our calendar to not get in the way.

We, the Diocese of Virginia, recognize that a great deal of this energy is coming directly from the youth themselves. If you have any feedback of any kind for us or if you would like to see our diocese respond more specifically in some way, we want to know! If your church is mobilizing, please let us know! We are eager to hear how our youth are responding and would love to hear from you about what you’re seeing and hearing. Following the lead of our bishops, we have taken a stance of being active listeners when it comes to this effort and we’ve already heard a great deal, more and more every day. I encourage any and all of you to be a part of this dialogue both with us and your community with whatever it is you’re feeling.

There are plans (still being formulated) for some of our churches/youth to rally somewhere in the NOVA/DC area and march together. When I get more details about those I’ll be sure to share those with anyone who might be interested. We’ll go back to the farm next year, I’ve already rescheduled for March 23rd, 2019, they said they’ll be glad to have us back. Let me know if you have any questions or if you want to discuss this new development further. I’m happy to be available and supportive anyway that I can.

Thanks again for all your support and your vital work with our youth! Have a great week!

Upcoming Summer 2018 Opportunities for High School Youth January 12, 2018

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and 2018 is off to a great start! I wanted to pass on a couple exciting opportunities for your high school aged youth who might be looking for some spiritual/church related experience this summer, good chance I have just the thing! Check out the three listed below and if you end up sending one of your youth on one of the first two, let us know! We’d love to learn more about these two rich programs and get more youth to go in the future……

Convergence: Where Faith and Science Meet” is a 9-day program (June 23-July 1, 2018) that allows rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students to come to Randolph-Macon’s campus in Ashland, Virginia and learn about the intersection of science and faith in the classroom and through hands-on experiences. They will dive deeper into their faith, deeper into the study of science, and meet other high school students and Randolph-Macon College student counselors with those same interests. The cost to participate is only $100 for this 9-day program. Upon high school graduation, if a Convergence participant chooses to attend Randolph-Macon, they will receive a $1,000 scholarship for each year they participated in Convergence.

Feel free to visit the website to learn more. If you would like to nominate a participant, you can click here to fill out the nomination form, and the Convergence staff will contact your nominee with further information.  The application form for participants is available here.

SUMMA Student Theological Debate Society is inviting high school students entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2018 to apply for SUMMA Debate Camp, held July 17-25 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. SUMMA Camp is a unique opportunity for students to explore their faith through intellectual channels, meet lifelong friends, and have a lot of fun on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country!

At SUMMA Camp, students of all faiths learn valuable skills for debate, public speaking, and theological reflection.  No previous debate experience or formal theological study is necessary. Campers have a true collegiate experience, but camp is not all work! There is plenty of time left over to swim, play sports, watch movies, go bowling, and have lots of great, summer fun!  For more information and to apply, visit summa.sewanee.edu.

Last but certainly not least, Senior High Youth Conference at Shrine Mont Camps! Senior High Youth Conference or SHYC is open to rising 9th -12th graders and runs from July 15th-22nd. From our camps website: “SHYC is a camp for high school aged youth focused on giving back to the community.  The theme is “be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22).  Expect to challenge and stretch yourself physically and spiritually while having a ton of fun and hanging out with awesome people!  This a great camp for those wishing to grow as leaders.  Bible study, helping others, dance parties and much more will happen during your week at SHYC!” For more information click here.

That’s all for now, be on the lookout for more updates about all things diocesan youth ministry as we get closer to the Spring. I put a reminder at the bottom of this message about upcoming PYM dates so be sure to mark your calendars if you haven’t already. Enjoy the long weekend everyone!

PYM Sr. High Weekend @ Shrine Mont (Nov 3rd – 5th) REGISTRATION IS OPEN October 20, 2017

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and HOPEFULLY we’re finally going to enjoy some Fall weather, although I hear it’s going to get hot again. Today I want to share with you some resources for our PYM Sr. High Weekend which is a little less than 2 weeks away (November 3rd-5th @ Shrine Mont). The committee has been very active planning and getting organized for our first retreat and we’re really excited about everything lined up including our keynote speaker this year, Connor Gwin! Connor is no stranger to our Diocese and served our camps as staff chaplain several summers ago. He also has extensive camp and youth experience (Diocese of SWVA & Kanuga) and really knows the nature of our group well. We’re very excited to have him back on the mountain!

The weekend promises to be a big success and we hope you can bring a group from your church, and to help with that recruiting effort we have some resources to share:

  • The first resource is the registration packet itself here. Please note that pages 3 and 4 are information about the weekend and can be helpful for explaining what exactly the weekend might look and feel like.
  • You can also go to our blog’s “PYM 101” page for more information about PYM and our weekends. Click here to learn more.
  • The committee also created a flyer that would be perfect for a bulletin board in your parishes or however you see fit. Here’s the YouTube video they made a couple months ago…… you can tell they’re excited :).

Registration is NOW OPEN and we’ve already had a few groups sign up. Registration is $150 per participant and that’s all inclusive (room, board, programming). We do have some scholarship money available if needed, please inquire with me directly. Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do. Thank you again so much for all your support, see you all at Shrine Mont in a few weeks!

Welcome Back Youth Ministers! August 29, 2017

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope you all have had fantastic summers and are excited about the new program year. It’s officially the last week of summer which means the Fall will be here before we know it. This is my favorite time of year for so many reasons, but mainly because of all the fresh energy and enthusiasm that comes with the new youth ministry season! I imagine many of you have already hit the ground running so I want to be sure everybody has what they need to make their plans for the year.

Below you’ll find the list of diocesan youth events and a link to their forms. Registration is open for all events and I’m happy to do whatever I can to help get you and your youth to join us. If you have any questions or if I can help, please don’t hesitate to ask. Keep in mind, for PYM weekends at Shrine Mont we do have some scholarship money available as needed.

That’s all for today, thanks again for everything you do for the youth here in DIOVA. There’s no question we would not be able to thrive without you! If there’s anything else I can do, even if it’s not youth event related, please don’t hesitate to ask. I’m pretty good at connecting people to colleagues who might be working through some of the same challenges you are and happy to be a resource myself.

Thanks again, have a fantastic week!
