Guide Us Waking, O Lord…

Because ministry is never 9-5

#Awaken:Grace, Feb 3-5 @ Richmond Hill, Postponed (feedback needed!) February 2, 2017

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope you are all having great weeks and are staying warm! Unfortunately, due to low numbers we’re going to postpone our spiritual formation retreat (#Awaken:Grace) to a later date. We’re still really excited about the event, and I can’t tell you how impressed I am with my leadership team and their programming, but we want to be sure that this is both a resource and accessible for your youth moving forward.

To be sure we’re successful in the future, we’d love to hear from you all to help us figure out ways we can improve this new program. Below I came up with three questions that I would love to hear your thoughts on. All responses can be emailed to me directly (either hit “Reply” or email me at mwade@thediocese.net) and I’ll take these notes back to my team. Your feedback is really helpful!

-In terms of mission, Is an intentional spiritual formation retreat for youth a good idea and one you would support? Feel free to elaborate if you wish.

-In terms of scheduling, what time of year makes the most sense for your youth to have this event? Any time to avoid?

-In terms of support, what can the diocese do to help get your youth involved?

Thanks again for your ongoing support and ministries. Have a great weekend everyone!

2017, Big Year For Senior High Youth (Sign Up Deadlines Rapidly Approaching!) January 3, 2017

Happy New Year’s Youth Leaders!

I hope you all had wonderful holidays and enjoyed ringing in the new year. As most of you already know there are lots of big things coming in 2017 and youth ministry here in the Diocese of Virginia is no different. There are two events I want to quickly highlight for your high school youth. These two events are going to headline what I know are going to be great events in 2017 and I hope you can get your youth involved…..but you have to act fast!

#Awaken:Grace – February 3-5, 2017 at Richmond Hill Retreat Center (Richmond, VA)

The first of our new annual spiritual formation retreat designed specifically for your youth who are looking to explore deeper into their faith than conventional youth ministry retreats and to help self-discover what their faith means to them. The leadership team we assembled is awesome and the program is phenomenal. I’m really excited for this brand new program but we need youth to take a chance with us on something new. Click here to find the flyer and the registration form. Paperwork is due by Jan 31st which is less than a month away so don’t delay!

Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) – July 10-14, 2017 at the University of Central Oklahoma (Edmond, OK)

EYE is the biggest youth event the episcopal church offers and this year will be no different. It’s a nationwide gathering that happens once every three years so this is likely the only chance each of your youth will have to go. These events are always headlined with really talented speakers and very fulfilling workshops, not to mention lots of other fun programs in between. Like #Awaken:Grace slots are limited so if you’re interested check out the flyer/application here and get it in by February 15th at the latest.

That’s all for today. I hope everyone is having a smooth transition back to the real world after such a long and wonderful holiday. If there’s anything I can do to be supportive or if you have any questions about either of these events just let me know, happy to help. Thanks again for all of your wonderful and important ministries and Happy New Year’s!

Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) 2017! July 10-14, 2017 December 15, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Advent season and the holiday craziness isn’t overwhelming. I for one feel like December has flown by (Christmas is in ten days!) and I imagine the rest of the month will be more of the same.

I have great news about an upcoming opportunity in 2017 that you’ll be very excited to hear about. Episcopal Youth Event (or EYE) is happening in July of 2017 and the Diocese of Virginia is going! We are looking for 24 of your youth from all over our diocese to attend this event and 7 adult chaperones to join them. EYE is July 10-14 in Edmond, OK at the University of Central Oklahoma. EYE is the largest gathering of Episcopalians outside of General Convention and is a fantastic chance to see the great Episcopal Church in action. The event is about 5 days jam packed with formation, small group conversation, really fantastic keynote speakers, outreach projects, and it’s a ton of fun! I went to St. Paul, MN for EYE 2011 and it’s still an experience I think about all the time and remember fondly.

Our group will gather on the 9th for an overnight at a parish in northern Virginia and get on plane the next day to get to Oklahoma. Details are still being ironed out about the 9th but information, a flyer, and how to apply can all be found in this packet HERE. EYE is a huge opportunity for your youth and only happens once every 3 years. Unless you are a freshman this is the only opportunity for them to attend that they’ll ever have. This event is for youth who are currently in high school. Be sure to get the application into the hands of your youth and/or chaperones as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is in two months (February 15th) and I’ll be following up with the group attending shortly thereafter.

This is a big deal in the Episcopal Church folks and I would love nothing more than to get your youth to Oklahoma this summer. Don’t let the opportunity go to waste! If you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do to help please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks again, and happy holidays!

#Awaken:Grace, Spiritual Formation Retreat for Youth (Feb 3-5, 2017 @ Richmond Hill) November 29, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders and Happy Holidays!

I hope this message finds you well as begin the season Advent. I have one very exciting announcement to pass on to you all today and it’s been a long time coming, so here goes!…

The Diocese of Virginia would like to formally invite your high school youth to the first annual spiritual formation retreat! I have been working with a team of very talented youth people and clergy from all over Virginia who have built this brand new program from the ground up for 2017.  It is specifically catered to meet the spiritual and formation needs of youth looking to dive deeper into faith and their relationship with God. This new program will be hosted at Richmond Hill Retreat Center in downtown Richmond which really offers something unique and unlike any other diocesan youth program.

You can find the flyer and registration form here which includes more information about the program. Please feel free to share with your youth and parents. Space and time to sign up is limited so don’t delay. If you have any questions or want to learn more let me know! Thanks again and Happy Holidays everyone!

Diocese of Virginia & Liverpool Pilgrimages 2017 October 20, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re having a great week. I wanted to pass on this information about a really exciting opportunity for youth to go abroad and visit our friends in the Diocese in Liverpool, England. Here’s the information straight from the leadership, Rock Higgins, and a link to fill out a form to learn more. Check it out and be sure to pass it on. See you at Sr. High in a few weeks!

Dear rising 8th-11th graders and Families,
The Diocese of Virginia is seeking a team of pilgrims and chaperones to go to visit our partner Diocese in Liverpool, England next summer, and a few weeks later they will visit us. We are looking at the two trips happening between late July and mid-August of 2017. We will go there first, then host here. We hope to have a representative team from several parishes in Greater Richmond, with a chaperone from each represented parish if at all possible.

The purpose of the pilgrimage is to explore the history of the historic slave triangle and look to a future in hope and reconciliation. Richmond, Liverpool, and the Republic of Benin all share an identical statue, the Slavery Reconciliation Statue. We will visit 2 of these. This will only be one part of the many stories and aspects we will explore in our mutual pilgrimages.

We invite families who are interested to apply. The cost of the 2 parts of the trip per person is estimated to be between $3500 and 4000. We will be doing fundraisers and defraying the cost as much as we can, but need to be realistic of expectations from the outset. Once accepted as a Pilgrim, a deposit and a contract for the remaining cost will be due.

We will have informational meetings as soon as our team is formed, answering as many questions as we can. If you have need of information sooner, please contact the Reverend Rock Higgins at revrockhiggins@gmail.com or 804-306-2112.

So, if intrigued or interested, talk with your youth leader at your parish, pray, and consider applying. We hope to have our team formed as soon as possible. We will have a rolling application process, so if you really want to be a pilgrim please apply quickly.

Blessings,

The Reverend Rock Higgins,
for the Dioceses of Virginia & Liverpool Youth Pilgrimage 2017

PYM Sr. High Weekend @ Shrine Mont (Nov 4th – 6th) October 13, 2016

Greetings Youth Leaders!

I hope this message finds you well and you’re enjoying the beginning of what’s been a beautiful fall season. Today I want to share with you some resources for our PYM Sr. High Weekend which is a little less than 4 weeks away (November 4th-6th @ Shrine Mont). The committee has been very active planning and getting organized for our first retreat and we’re really excited about everything lined up including our keynote speaker this year, Brad Grinnen! Brad is no stranger to our Diocese and served our camps as chaplain as well as keynoting Sr. High Weekend in 2011. We’re very excited to have him back again!

The weekend promises to be a big success and we hope you can bring a group from your church, and to help with that recruiting effort we have some resources to share:

-The first resource is the registration packet itself HERE. Please note that pages 3 and 4 are information about the weekend and can be helpful for explaining what exactly the weekend might look and feel like.

-You can also go to our blog’s “PYM 101” page for more information about PYM and our weekends.

-The committee also created two colorful flyers (flyer_1 and flyer_2) that would be perfect for a bulletin board in your parishes or however you see fit.

Registration is NOW OPEN and we’ve already had a few groups sign up. Registration is $150 per participant and that’s all inclusive (room, board, programming). We do have some scholarship money available if needed, please inquire with me directly. Let me know if you have any questions or if there’s anything I can do. Thank you again so much for all your support, see you all at Shrine Mont in a few weeks!
